In lord of the flies, the overall theme is the conflict between human impulses and the rules of civilisation which are designed to minimize it. At first, the boys were innocent but when left alone without supervision and soon turned into violent savages, they ignored the rules of civilisation although they knew all along what was right and what was wrong, the human impulses of savagery and corruption shone through in the end.
