“What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won.” – Duncan

“If chance will have me, king, why, chance may crown me, Without my stir.” – Macbeth

“Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be, which the eye fears, when it is done, to see” – Macbeth

This is something that Macbeth says in response to hearing that Malcolm, King Duncan’s son will be the heir to the throne

Macbeth himself does not want to see what he must do to achieve the throne, but at the same time, he urges “let that be what the eye fears, when it is done, to see.”

“… I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself and falls on the other – ” – Macbeth

“Upon my head, they placed a fruitless crown, and put a barren scepter in my gripe.” – Macbeth

“I am in blood. Stepped in so far, that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o’er.”- Macbeth

  • Macbeth compares his situation to crossing a river of blood: he has gone so far that it would be difficult to go back as to continue to the other side.
